WEST BOYLSTON - The
town’s bicentennial might be more than a year away, but the work of the
volunteer committee behind the yearlong celebration has been long underway.
Now residents have the opportunity to keep updated on that progress via the
World Wide Web.
Westboylston200.com and wb200.com
are both addresses for the site, according to site administrator Christopher
Rucho, selectmen and member of the Bicentennial Committee.
"We're going to keep it
updated as we put events together, and as more information becomes
available," Rucho said. "As we get more events booked, we're going to
add them to the Web site."
Right now, the site has news
articles related to the 200th birthday of the town, as well as a link to where
you can buy bicentennial merchandise, Rucho said.
Currently, you can order items
and a committee member will deliver them, but Rucho hopes to set up a credit
card option soon.
Recently, the Bicentennial
Committee received new merchandise. This includes youth and adult shirts, Rucho
said.
The main page also features a
countdown clock.
"We want to get people to
keep coming back," Rucho said. "That's the main thing. I want to keep
adding information as it comes up."
That will include a list of
sponsors and detailed parade information for not only residents, but for the
groups taking part in the parade itself, Rucho said.
"The parade is going to
start to take shape over the next few months," Rucho said.
Perhaps one of the most important
things on the Web site, according to Rucho, is the ability to sign up as a
volunteer. Considering the events
planned and the need for sponsors, the need for help is great, he said.
"We need 10 to 15
(volunteers)," Rucho said. "And not just on the day of the parade. We
need to get people involved in the planning."
For example, Rucho said, one
planned event is a class reunion for all of the graduating classes from West
Boylston High School, which will celebrate its 50th birthday in 2008.
"We're in the planning
stages right now," Rucho said. "We think (the reunion) would be fun
and we're trying to get people excited."
The Web site, Rucho said, will
say active at the very least through 2008.
"Mainly, I want people to
know it's out there, and I want people to know about the celebration and to get
involved in the celebration,” Rucho said. “It’s going to be a fun event
for the town."
