WEST BOYLSTON— Though the West Boylston Bicentennial Celebration is still two years in the future, preparations for its arrival are well on their way.

Those preparations include planning for a parade and the celebration itself, which is expected to cost quite a bit of money. That is why the committee is starting, or has, in fact, already started planning for this event.

The committee will be having a major fund drive in which it collects money from major local donors and businesses. A townwide mailing is also in the works.

One ongoing fund-raiser is the selling of souvenirs. According to co-chairman of the souvenir committee, Bev Goodale, souvenirs such as mugs and ornaments are available for town residents to purchase. Proceeds will go toward Bicentennial events.

"We are selling pewter ornaments through 2008, eight in all, which depict landmarks in town," said Goodale. "They were made to be year-round, not necessarily for the holidays."

Two of the eight ornaments came out in 2005. According to Goodale, two more will come out in 2006, 2007 and 2008 respectively.

"Right now, we are selling the ornament of the Old Stone Church and the watering trough," said Goodale. "Those came out in 2005."

'We also have a mug with the West Boylston logo on it, a blue folder with a silver logo, and a magnet," Goodale added .

The committee is also purchasing a trolley from New Hampshire, which will serve as a place to sell the ornaments and other souvenirs.

"We used to have trolleys in West Boylston, and it is something that the people can associate with the Bicentennial Committee," said Goodale. "If there is an event in town, we will be able to have the trolley pulled to that event and sell the articles there."

Goodale added that this is merely the start of the souvenir sales, and the souvenir committee has more ideas, possibly clothing items such as T-shirts.

"There is a lot that goes into the Bicentennial event, and we want to get ahead," said Goodale.

The items can be bought at The West Boylston Historical Society building on West Boylston Street, which is open every Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.
