Bicentennial brings full slate for June 6 – 8

A full slate of activities is scheduled for the weekend of June 6 through 8 in celebration of West Boylston’s 200th birthday.

Beginning Friday, June, 6, Revolutionary War re-enactors will make presentations to students at the elementary and middle schools before setting up camp in the center of town.

The colonials will set up an encampment at the Historical Society, and the Red Coats will camp on the common in front of the Masonic Lodge. Both groups will be assisted by high school students. These events are not open to the public.

Throughout the weekend, the Ladies of Refined Taste will be at the Bigelow Tavern (the Historical Society Building) across from the Congregational Church. They will be cooking for the soldiers and giving needlework demonstrations. There will also be vendors, called sutlers, at the Historical Society selling Revolutionary War items.

There will demonstrations and drills on the common throughout the weekend and food vendors will be situated around the common.

Saturday, June 7
• The West Boylston Bicentennial 5K walk/run will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the high school on Crescent Street and go down Bullard’s Hill by the Lutheran Church and circle the Thomas Basin, ending at the elementary school.

• At 9 a.m. the Revolutionary War memorial on the common and the grave of Joseph Dwelley, a Revolutionary soldier buried in Mount Vernon Cemetery, will be rededicated.

• From 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. a first day of issue stamp, featuring a design of the Bigelow Tavern, will be sold on the common, along with cards and envelopes to capture the cancellation stamp.

• From 1 to 3 p.m. there will be a battle between His Majesty’s fifth regiment of foot and rebels of the Fourth Middlesex, aided by the (French) 85 Regiment de Saintonge.

• Buses will be available to transport spectators to and from designated parking lots to the common and Camp Woodhaven from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Cost is $2.50 per person. Spectator parking will be at Wal-Mart, Checkerboard Ltd. and Salter College lots. Handicapped parking will be available at Camp Woodhaven. The last bus from Church Street to spectator parking lots runs at 10 p.m.

• At 7 p.m. Middlesex County Volunteers Fife and Drum will hold a concert at the bandstand on the common.

Sunday June 8
• At 9 a.m. there will be an Ecumenical church service on the common

• From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. there will be re-enactor tacticals and a muster contest on common.
