WEST BOYLSTON — The winners of the West Boylston historical essay contest went into Boston recently to receive a proclamation declaring March 7, 2008 West Boylston Day in Massachusetts . Governor Deval Patrick presented the proclamation to Essay winners Matt Gomes, Nathan Bricault, Kaleigh Ryder, and Nicole Ellis. The fifth essay winner, John Welch, was unable to attend.

Included among the invited guests were the parents of the students, members of the Board of Selectmen Val Pruneau and his wife, Jackie, Allen Phillips and his wife, Mychelle, and Chris Rucho and his wife, Julie. Neil Norum attended representing the town’s veterans and Nancy Barakian represented the Senior Center. Historical Society and Bicentennial Committee Members Aaron and Beverly Goodale also attended.

Jared Fancy who dressed as the young Ezra Beaman, presented the governor with some Bicentennial gifts, including a coin and a children’s book, “The Tale of Ezra Beaman,” written by Benjamin Fancy and illustrated by Jared Fancy. The group was given a tour of the State House and was provided with a lunch by state Senator Harriette Chandler and state Representative James O’Day.

Patrick praised Fancy’s work as an illustrator, and when it was pointed out to him that the Goodales are Fancy’s grandparents, he said, “You must be very proud.”
