Various events set for 2008

WEST BOYLSTON— With the town’s yearlong bicentennial celebration beginning next month, the committee is looking for volunteers to help staff the full slate of events scheduled for the upcoming year.

Val Pruneau, Bicentennial Committee chairman, said the committee has already secured sponsors for the Grand Ball and the Easter Egg Roll in March, but help is needed for the Revolutionary War re-enactment in June, Circus Smirkus in July and the parade in September, as well as for other events.

“The Garden Club is sponsoring the Grand Ball, and the Firefighters’ Ladies Auxiliary is sponsoring the Easter Egg Roll,” Pruneau said.

The committee is hoping to have a Ham and Bean supper as part of the re-enactment weekend. Activities Committee member Aaron Goodale said the committee is hoping the area churches, the Odd Fellows and Masonic Home will help with the event.

“We’re going to need people to cook, set up tables and serve,” Pruneau said.

Goodale said the committee is still looking for financial sponsors, as well as help with the events.

“We can always use more sponsors,” Goodale said.

Circus Smirkus, an international traveling youth circus, is scheduled to set up its big top on the high school baseball field for four shows in July.

“We’re going to require a host of people for it,” Pruneau said. “We’re going to need host families to put the (performing) kids up and we’re going to need volunteers to sell and distribute tickets.”

Pruneau said volunteers are needed for the parade, scheduled for Sept. 21. Each group marching in the parade will have a banner, and Pruneau said volunteers are needed to carry the banners during the parade.

“We could have the Boy Scouts or high school students,” Pruneau said.

Pruneau said anyone interested in volunteering to help with one or more events should call him at (508) 852-0245.

“There’s a meeting on Jan. 24 at 6:30 (p.m.) at the Library,” he said. “People can come and sign up then.”
