BOYLSTON — Next weekend features a full
slate of bicentennial-related activities, starting Friday, June 6,
when Revolutionary War re-enactors will make presentations to
students at the elementary and middle schools before setting up camp
in the center of town.
Throughout the weekend, the Ladies of Refined Taste will be at the
Bigelow Tavern (the Historical Society Building), cooking for the
soldiers and giving needlework demonstrations. There will also be
vendors at the Historical Society selling Revolutionary War items.
There will demonstrations and drills on the common throughout the
weekend and food vendors will be situated around the common.
On Saturday, the Revolutionary War memorial on the common and the
grave of Joseph Dwelley, a Revolutionary soldier buried in Mount
Vernon Cemetery, will be rededicated at 9 a.m.
Also on Saturday, a battle re-enactment will take place at Camp
Woodhaven from 1 to 3 p.m. Buses will take interested persons from
outlying spectator parking lots at Wal-Mart, Salter College and
Checkerboard Ltd. to the common and to Camp Woodhaven for a cost of
$2.50 round trip, with a family cap of $10. Buses run from the
common to Camp Woodhaven from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The last bus from
the common to spectator parking lots runs at 10 p.m.
No parking, other than for those with handicap placards, is allowed
at Camp Woodhaven or on Campground Road. Parking will be limited in
the center of town.
In addition, The Worcester Veteran Services Mobile Education Unit
will be on the common on Saturday, June 7, with individuals who will
be able to answer questions about veteran’s services. Additionally,
the mobile unit will have computers set up so that people may e-mail
troops.
On Saturday, June 7, The Historical Society is sponsoring the sale
of a first day of issue stamp, featuring a Bigelow Tavern design.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the stamp will be issued on the common. West
Boylston themed cards and envelopes will be on sale to capture the
historic cancellation stamp.
Mariena Harris, a graduating senior at West Boylston High School,
was recently elected to serve as the president of the Massachusetts
Society of the Children of the American Revolution. Harris will be
at the mobile unit to answer questions about the National Society of
the Children of the American Revolution, as well as answering
questions and looking for support for her effort to raise money
toward her larger state project, which is to donate funds to the
Veterans Inc. shelter in Worcester.
On Saturday, a 5/K bicentennial walk/run will be held, starting at
8:30 a.m. at the high school on Crescent Street. The race will
circle the Thomas Basin, ending at the elementary school.
At 7 p.m. Middlesex County Volunteers Fife and Drum will hold a
concert at the bandstand on the common.
On Sunday, June 8, there will be an Ecumenical church service on the
common at 9 a.m. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. there will be re-enactor
tacticals and a muster contest on common.
