WEST BOYLSTON – While it seems a little premature to be celebrating the town’s bicentennial, since the town won’t be 200 until 2008, the Bicentennial Committee is starting early with a kickoff dinner dance at Wachusett Country Club on Saturday, Nov. 20, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

The program will feature the announcement of the winner of the logo contest and a slate of speakers, including Edgar Whitcomb and committee Chairman Chuck Hudson.

The dance will feature DJ Richard Simmarano and a buffet dinner.

“This kickoff dance is to let people know that the town’s bicentennial year is just around the corner and that we are going to make a big deal about it,” committee Secretary Mychelle Phillips said.

“This event is not a money maker. It’s really to get the word out and to start building excitement. We’re getting ready for a yearlong celebration in 2008 and we want people to know that 2008 is not that far away. We have plenty of time for fund raising between now and 2008. This event is just to get the word out.

“We are hoping too have events each month during 2008 and to touch each age group in the community,” Phillips said.

Some of the planned events include a founder’s day celebration, an anniversary dance, a road race, a parade, a tree-lighting celebration, fireworks and a bonfire.

The five winners of the logo contest will be announced at the dance. Winners from each category – elementary school, middle/high school, seniors and citizens/local businesses – will receive a $25 savings bond.

“The grand prize winner will receive a $100 savings bond and will have their logo used on all kinds of promotional material for bicentennial events,” Phillips said.

Tickets for the dinner are $25 and are available at West Boylston Insurance or from Bicentennial Committee members Aaron and Beverly Goodale, Chuck Hudson, bonnie Fancy, Floyd Pearcy, Roger Hall, Helen Tashjian, Jack and Pauline McCormick, Karen McGinn, Karen Pare, Mike Kittredge, Michelle Harris, Nancy Barakian, Nancy Lucier, Kim Hopewell, Chris Rucho, and Allen and Mychelle Phillips.
